Agricultural research, innovation and the future with Lumatek
At Lumatek we are constantly striving for innovation, not just in our lights but on a larger scale. Our participation in University projects is a huge part of what allows us to contribute to the constant innovation that is happening in the agricultural and horticultural world. With the world constantly changing, especially in terms of how we grow food, we are seeing a rise in both indoor and vertical farming techniques, and in studies of them.
When we were approached by Klaipeda University in Lithuania, we leapt at the opportunity to be part of one such project. Researchers at Klaipeda were setting up a study to research the growth of a number of different food crops in an indoor greenhouse space, including tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces and herbs.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to lighting!
Because of the mixture of plants that was being studied in the same physical space, we had to design a careful light plan that would cater to the significantly different light requirements of the various crops.
Tomatoes and cucumbers have significantly higher light requirements than lettuces and herbs, so we had to put together a plan that would ensure these would not get damaged during the growth process.
By knowing the location of the greenhouse, as well as how it is set up we can calculate not only how many hours of useable sunlight the greenhouse receives a day, but also how much of that light is lost due to light transmission through the greenhouse coverage film material, sun position, shading within the greenhouse structure itself, and various other factors.
With this information and knowing the light requirements of the different crop types being grown, we used our Light Planner to devise a plan that would provide the intensity required for the tomatoes and cucumbers, without damaging the lettuces and herbs.
To match all their needs, we recommended units of our 680W Green House Top Light LEDs (White and Red) to achieve a PPFD average of ยตmol / m2 / s, installed at 1.2 metres above the canopy to prevent any damage.
Our happiness comes from that of our customers!
At Lumatek our happiness comes from that of our clients, knowing that we have truly helped our growers grow. We cannot consider it a job well done until we know that our clients are happy with the solutions that we have provided them.
